3 former workers: Firm paid pro-Bush bonuses Sproul & Associates hired part-time and temporary workers who got an hourly rate, plus $3 for every Bush, undecided, and Nader registration. There was no bonus for Democratic registrations. Since MN does not include a spot on the registration form to declare your party affiliation, workers had to get that information from people and report back to Sproul. Sproul then had verifiers call each person who registered to verify that they were a Bush supporter.

(Sproul & Associates was hired by the Republican National Committee. They have been involved in registration scandals already this year in Nevada, Arizona, and other states, after former employees started coming forward to report that non-Republican registrations were being discarded and/or destroyed.)

Tonight I had a call from the Bush campaign, asking if the President could expect my support on election day. I politely but firmly said "no, he certainly may not", and then thanked the nice woman who called for being involved in the process. She seemed quite startled by that.

Not sure why they called me, as I'm surely not on any of the Republican donor lists! Must be because of the zipcode/neighborhood I'm in.

Tons of Iraq explosives missing: "Massive" facility also held large caches of artillery 10/25/04, CNN

U.N. agency says 377 tons of explosives were looted 10/26/04, The Herald News, Bergen Co., NJ
No Check of Bunker, Unit Commander Says 10/27/04, New York Times

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was only recently informed that these explosives have been missing for some time, quite possibly since April 2003, after the site was supposedly inspected and secured by the US military after the invasion of Iraq. (It is possible that some of these explosives have actually been used- against US troops in Iraq.)

Bush's plan for invasion had no arrangements in place for guarding national treasures- or even, apparently, weapons stockpiles that had been reported, inspected, and sealed by the IAEA and the UN weapons inspectors before the invasion, and which were under constant (US) satellite watch prior to the invasion.

Bush and Cheney are both on the campaign trail saying it's not their fault the explosives weren't guarded after the invasion.

Apparently we no longer live in a time when the Commander in Chief takes responsibility for what happens under his watch.

What ever happened to "the buck stops here"?

How freaky. An LJ user was visited by the Secret Service, because someone reported that she'd "threatened the President" in one of her LJ posts.

That the Secret Service visited over a reported threat, well, so be it- it seems they were polite, and they were just doing their job.

What bugs me about this, is that someone on LJ turned her in. Someone who did not grasp the basic concept of satire, decided they needed to call the Secret Service and report something they didn't like as a threat?

What is this world coming to?

Kudos to [livejournal.com profile] anniesj for handling this nightmare situation with such class.
