"If the recall succeeds, it will set a dangerous precedent for the whole country. A far-right businessman spent 1.7 million dollars to bring us the recall campaign, and has thrown California into chaos. GOP leaders who should have condemned the recall instead cheered it on, hoping they could gain from the unraveling of our democracy.

"We can't stand by and let this happen. These attacks on democracy are not a California issue or a Texas issue or a Florida issue -- we all must step forward together and make it clear that elections will be honored in this country."

I've been using the Live Journal for Windows desktop piece for a while now (like over a year), and for the most part it's great. However, if you use it to edit an earlier message, hit post, and it comes back with "unable to reach server, try again later", when you hit "okay" your edited message disappears, never to be seen again.

It only happens once every few months, so it's not a BIG thing. But when it does happen, it's a royal freakin' pain.

This is a recreation of the lost post update (see previous post); referring to the California recall (see post before previous post).

I'm not opposed to the idea of a recall, in and of itself. The ability to remove someone from office when they have committed a crime or violated state government statutes or the constitution is an important part of a democratic government.

The problem with the California recall is that it isn't being done for any of those reasons. It was spearheaded by a guy who wanted to jump from Congress to Governor, but didn't want to have to give up his seat to do it. $1.7 million of his own money, paying for people to get those petitions signed.

It's not happening because Gray Davis did anything wrong; it's being done because Enron screwed California. Enron has pals in the White House, and this is all being used.

It's being done because Bill Simon lost last fall, and there are aspects of the Republican party that are very, very sore losers.

If he had done something criminal, that would be one thing. But he hasn't. He's just got the misfortune of being a Democrat holding a seat the Republicans wanted, and are absolutely determined to get no matter what.
