Sep. 4th, 2003 10:45 pmThis is a recreation of the lost post update (see previous post); referring to the California recall (see post before previous post).
I'm not opposed to the idea of a recall, in and of itself. The ability to remove someone from office when they have committed a crime or violated state government statutes or the constitution is an important part of a democratic government.
The problem with the California recall is that it isn't being done for any of those reasons. It was spearheaded by a guy who wanted to jump from Congress to Governor, but didn't want to have to give up his seat to do it. $1.7 million of his own money, paying for people to get those petitions signed.
It's not happening because Gray Davis did anything wrong; it's being done because Enron screwed California. Enron has pals in the White House, and this is all being used.
It's being done because Bill Simon lost last fall, and there are aspects of the Republican party that are very, very sore losers.
If he had done something criminal, that would be one thing. But he hasn't. He's just got the misfortune of being a Democrat holding a seat the Republicans wanted, and are absolutely determined to get no matter what.
