Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife, Sheila, and daughter Marcia were killed today in a small-plane crash near Eveleth, MN. Three campaign staffers and two pilots were also on board; there were no survivors.

There is little information at this point; CNN (TV) is running it full time. The StarTribune doesn't have much yet.

(Norm Coleman and the unspecified groups who are running attack ads had DAMN well better pull them NOW. )

What are we going to DO???

I can't believe this.

The first time I met Paul Wellstone was the night he won his senate seat in 1990. I was there as he was told that Boschwitz was conceding. He was shocked that he'd actually won, and so purely, utterly thrilled, it was amazing to see. The man glowed.

He was a decent man, and he and his wife fought for people who couldn't fight for themselves.

He will be greatly missed.

A candlelight vigil in memory of Senator Paul Wellstone will be held at the State Capitol in St. Paul, Minnesota, this evening beginning at 5:30pm CST.

The Wellstone campaign headquarters in St. Paul has become a memorial site of sorts, with posters, cards, notes, and signs being left.

The Wellstone Family has asked that in lieu of flowers, anyone who wishes to remember Paul, Sheila, and Marcia, please make a donation to a food shelf or other charity.

The statement on the Wellstone site is heartbreaking.

Most campaigns in Minnesota have been suspended at least for today.

The Wellstone campaign was due to start a new ad campaign today, called "Represent". They showed it on WCCO tv, and it's good- an absolute tear-jerker (especially the last shot, of him and Sheila) considering what's happened.

I keep thinking about going over for the vigil, but I hate crying in public, so I don't know. It's already going to be insanely crowded, wouldn't be able to get anywhere near it. There are crowds around the campaign office, and now they're showing scenes from the capitol and it's pretty well packed.

Damn. This just isn't real.

And in yet more depressing news, actor Richard Harris died today.

Today sucks.
