Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife, Sheila, and daughter Marcia were killed today in a small-plane crash near Eveleth, MN. Three campaign staffers and two pilots were also on board; there were no survivors.

There is little information at this point; CNN (TV) is running it full time. The StarTribune doesn't have much yet.

(Norm Coleman and the unspecified groups who are running attack ads had DAMN well better pull them NOW. )

What are we going to DO???

I can't believe this.

The first time I met Paul Wellstone was the night he won his senate seat in 1990. I was there as he was told that Boschwitz was conceding. He was shocked that he'd actually won, and so purely, utterly thrilled, it was amazing to see. The man glowed.

He was a decent man, and he and his wife fought for people who couldn't fight for themselves.

He will be greatly missed.

*comforts* I am sorry for your personal loss and sorry for the nation's loss of a man who obviously knew how to do his job.

Wellstone

He was an honest man.

As the law seems to say, Jesse Ventura gets to appoint a successor for this term (until early January 2003), and the Democratic Party can nominate someone to fill the ballot slot. What was a close race becomes a big win for the Democrats.

I hope they can find someone with principles, like Paul Wellstone.
