Yesterday I broke down and bought The Witches Tarot. A friend did a reading for me using it a few years ago, and it's stuck in my mind since. It's one of the few decks where I can look at most of the cards and intuitively know what they mean in that situation. With most "traditional" decks such as the Rider-Waite, I can look for ages and have no feel at all for what the cards are saying. (Let's not even talk about how slimy and creepy the Thoth deck feels- the artwork is mostly okay, but every one I've ever touched, in use or still in the plastic, just makes me shudder.)

What can I say, I'm an intuitive reader, not a classic/memorized meanings reader. *shrug*

The Witches Tarot is quite different, in that the court cards in this deck are meant only to be used as modifiers, not as having direct meanings of their own. ('course, then there's me- first I get out of it is a court card, which answered my question pretty directly all by itself.) There's also a Prince & Princess, instead of Knight and Page, for each.

Also, the wands signify air and the swords fire, which is the opposite of what I'm used to. With most decks, if a significator is chosen for me it's the Queen of Swords; when one was chosen from this deck, it was the Princess of Swords. Using the fire/air swap, one would think it would be wands with this deck, but it's not. Odd. Not that I use one myself, but it's one of those things that makes you wonder a bit when the topic does come up.

Bad me... I saw one while I was at the bookstore yesterday that I thought rothko might like, but did I write down what it was called? NooOOOoo. (Doh.)

A very interesting looking book that I noticed yesterday but didn't get (Yet.): Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong by James W. Loewen.

'snot slimy

I would just like to say that teh thoth deck isn`t nasty, its just really pessamistic - its the deck that I`ve been using since I got my first one back when was knee high to a grasshopper (well, 8-9ish) and its just a bit pessamistic - it throws up the problems that are likely to hit you, but it only does so so that you can be fewarned and thus forearmed.

*griff strokes deck to cheer it up*

Admittedly, I do know several other people who cant get along with it at all, but then again, some of the more airy decks (mother peace, faery wicca etc) dont work for me - I guess it comes down to the mentallity of the reader and the attitude of the deck needing to be compatible

I know it works well for some people. It's just not a deck I feel at all comfortable touching.

I've never even tried to do a reading with the Thoth deck simply because every time I've picked up a copy, I flinch and my hand feels like I've touched something rotten and disgusting. (The first few times it happened, I didn't even know what deck it was until I looked, trying to figure out what caused the reaction. Don't recall ever running into another deck that got that strong a negative response from me.) It's certainly strange; I just take it as a sign that it's not at all the right deck for me!
