asherisThough I'm almost surprised it took so long. People that I usually consider sensible folk have started calling for the US government to hit various countries in the Middle East with nuclear weapons.
Fools.
I sent the following response:
I knew it... I just knew people were going to start saying stupid shit like this. Hit the middle east with a nuclear attack, and we will make far more enemies than even the US can handle.
Our allies will be horrified at the (literal) overkill- and it may end up starting WWIII, because those countries do have allies with nuclear capabilities who may feel they are obligated to strike back, if we were to do something so utterly inhuman as attack an entire country because someone guilty was once there.*
WIPE OUT THE GUILTY, NOT THE INNOCENT BYSTANDERS.
Afghanistan has been hiding bin Laden for years- but most of the people in Afghanistan have nothing to do with it. Most of them live in fear of their own government. Many are virtually prisoners in their own homes. So please, do tell me, what the hell good will it do any of us to just "nuke 'em all"???
If we go in and kill indiscriminately, if we kill innocents along with the guilty, we lose all moral high ground.
We make enemies of anyone who survives the attack, enemies of anyone who lost friends or relatives- we perpetuate the cycle of killing the innocent.
What needs to be done now is to find out for sure who did this, go in with an extraction team, bring them out. If they fight, take them out then and there. Otherwise, bring them back here and put the bastards on trial. Give them the needle. That is justice.
Randomly killing everyone in an area of the world because a few people who look like them or share the same religion did this thing is wrong. ABSOLUTELY WRONG.
I am no pacifist. But I DO believe in making damn sure you're taking out the right people, and doing your best to avoid harming anyone who was NOT involved.
Indiscriminate killing, no matter WHO does it, is WRONG.
Yes- we're all angry. But killing thousands, millions of innocents just to DO something brings no one back, makes nothing better, and it is NOT justice- it is simply bloodlust.
* Think WWI. A Serbian assasinated Archduke Ferdinand of Austro-Hungary. A-H declared war on Serbia. Russia had a protection treaty with Serbia, so ended up declaring war on A-H. Germany had such a treaty with A-H, so they both declared war on Russia. France and England had mutual protection treaties with Russia, so they ended up declaring war on A-H and Germany. And so on down the line- literally within a day, all of Europe and some of the rest of the world, were all at war.
It's that easy.
In the age of nuclear weapons, think how quickly the whole planet could be pretty much obliterated. Just stop and think.
