From a letter Dwight Eisenhower wrote to his brother in 1956:
Should any political party attempt to abolish Social Security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again...there is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H.L. Hunt, a few other Texas millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

And from his farewell speech, the always popular and still accurate:
In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous use of misplaced power exists and will persist. "We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

If it were only true that this was the deathknell of the Republican party. The problem is, I think, that American's are on a whole stupid when it comes to politics and are listening to BushCo like a little old lady in Tulsa listens to Oral Roberts.
