Keep up with breaking news of voter imtimidation and suppression efforts.

Keep an eye on the number of calls to the 1-866-MYVOTE1 Voter Alert Line. (Supposed to be updating automatically every 15 minutes.) As of 12:45, EST, they had received over 40,000 calls reporting problems at the polls. Every state was represented. You can see a breakdown of voting equipment issues by machine, as well. (By clicking on each state, you can see a call breakdown by congressional district.)

The Election Protection hotline, 1-866-OUR-VOTE had received just shy of 5,300 calls by noon EST, reporting ballot problems, polling place and registration issues, and reports of voter intimidation.

The OUR VOTE line is for serious emergencies, such as being denied your right to vote (atterneys have volunteered to be on call to deal with legal issues at the polls); the MYVOTE1 line is available for all kinds of voting problems.

Both report cases in many states of people (for the most part in heavily minority neighborhoods) getting calls from people misrepresenting themselves as unions and other organizations, and "reminding" people that their polling place "has changed" - which it hadn't. It's getting so frequent that many TV stations have started running reports warning people to beware of such calls.

In some precints, people with unreadable badges are telling people waiting in long lines that they "can vote until November 18th": FALSE.

In other places, people are being turned away from the polls with claims that the lines are "a fire hazard"; in some polling places around the country, no one has been able to vote yet due to missing election judges and/or voter rolls, broken and malfunctioning equipment, etc. A Hillsborough County (NY) polling place had only 28 ballots cast in the entire first hour despite extremely long lines - a Republican poll monitor has been challenging each and every person trying to vote, requiring them to provide photo ID (not a requirement if you're a registered voter unless you're challenged) and sometimes multiple forms of ID.

How They Do, Part III: On Sunday, a documentary crew found a group of Republicans pretending to be gay Kerry supporters, with signs and shouting slogans about Kerry supporting gay marriage (he doesn't) and gay adoption, etc. in an attempt to turn the church-going African American vote in Ft. Lauderdale. (Thankfully, the church-goers saw through the lame attempt at disinformation.)

Daschle sues to stop 'intimidation' of Indians
Republican poll workers in Lake Andes were intimidating Native American voters on Monday, a federal judge ruled early today.

Republicans may not write down license plate numbers or follow Native Americans from polling places during today's election, U.S. District Judge Lawrence Piersol ruled in a temporary restraining order.

I'm off to go sit outside for four hours and cheer on voters. Also, to follow up with voters who pledged to come out for Kerry, make sure they remembered, and do some driving if anyone needs a ride.

Actually, I've been on call for driving all day, but no calls. Then again, I do live in a reasonably "upscale" suburb, where due to a lake of decent/frequent public transport, most people have cars.

Let's see...
lawn chair - check
thermos of hot tea - check
hooded sweatshirt for extra layer under winter coat later - check
gloves, etc. - check
blanket to help against cold - check, already in the car (this IS Minnesota!)
King's Street Atlas, in case I need to give rides - check
cell phone - check

Guess I just need to get myself out the door!
