I was thinking more along the lines of how it'll finally be an OS that can compete against M$ on their own architecture, so to speak.
A lot of people would like to be running the Mac OS, but to do so you currently have to buy a Mac machine. Which is, unfortunately, more expensive than a "similar" Windows machine. Those of us who generally upgrade by replacing a couple parts on our x86 machine... gods, if I could get my desktop machine onto a decent OS without having to buy a whole new machine? I'd be SO there!
Well. . .yes-ish. The only problem being that since x86 architechture/machines are so much cheaper, it would then cease to make any sense for apple to keep manufacturing on the PowerPC -- which renders 20 years of computing obsolete. No mac is an island! Unless, of course, this happens.
But anyway, that's my gut reaction. 'cause I like my mac. ^_^
Apple is a hardware company. They make their money selling hardware. They will never release a Mac OS that runs on other companies' x86 hardware. Not just because it would put them out of business, but because even if it wouldn't, they would never be able to afford to support all the hardware variations out there. I mean, IBM couldn't get OS/2 running on every PC out there, and look what happened to that.
If they do switch to x86, you will still need to buy an Apple x86 machine with an Apple BIOS to run Apple's OS. You'll just be unable to run any OS 9 software, and will need all-new binaries. So what's the point?
Also, in general PC users will not switch to a better OS running on the same hardware. Be tried it, and look what happened to them.
If you want a better OS for your existing crappy PC, run RedHat Linux 8.0. (No, I'm not kidding, it's really rather nice.)
Having read more about what they were/are planning to release, I realize that it wasn't at *all* what the initial article I read had led me to believe.
