Tax Day

I decided late last week that I was simply going to file for an extension, and talk to an accountant sometime after the 15th. Too many things on Schedule C that I'm unsure of, and I do NOT care to get selected for an audit because I made some dumb mistake!

TurboTax, H&R Block online, and the IRS publications themselves are less than clear on what goes in which blank, and which categories contain what data; I THINK I have things in the right places, but I just don't know for sure. I'm also quite certain there are more deductions that I could take, but I'm not sure how to get them or where they go on the forms.

I figure I'll get professional tax help this year, then I should know a lot more about how things work and probably be able to handle it on my own next year. Besides, odds are the accountant will find me some more deductions and I'll get a bigger refund, so he's likely to pay for himself. If not with this year's taxes, his suggestions should help me save more on next year's.

Of course, simply not getting audited because of a screwup is good, too!

I telefiled for the extension- that is a NICE service. Call in, punch in your SS# and DOB, enter some numbers off the extension request form, and get a confirmation number that proves you got an extension. Less than five minutes- 10-15 if you count getting together the few numbers you need (estimated tax owed, and tax paid).

Now, if they could only revamp their instructions so that they were consistently comprehensible...
