Feb. 17th, 2002 09:52 pmPlan for tonight: watching lots of ice dancing as they intersperse it with bits and pieces of other things. That French couple (Anissina & Peizerat)... the opening bit of their second required dance, I thought the ice was going to melt around them. I loved how they both wore their hair long and down for that one- very different, and it added a certain intimacy to the program that you don't usually see. A challenge, too, considering hers is not much above her waist!
That's what ice dancing is meant to be like!
I miss the days of Klimova & Ponomarenko, though. Their gold medal skate in the '92 Olympics (titled "A Man and a Woman: From the mundane to the sublime") is still the best I've ever seen (Hrm, also long hair worn down, come to think of it). Duchesnay & Duchesnay (dancing to some brother/sister sequences from West Side Story) had an amazing silver medal performance that year, but K&P won it, NO question.
I've got the skating from those Olympics on tape, but it's not terribly good- reception wasn't great, and the tape's 10 years old now. Still, I do pull it out to watch occasionally. It's up there with Torville & Dean's "Bolero" ('84) for true classic status. (Okay, okay, I'll mention "Hat Trick" ('94), too; but that was more fun than classic. Not that there's anything wrong with that, they're just two completely different styles.)
If you're a skate geek, too, these are some of the places I go to look for details:
2002 Olympics: Entries, start orders, & results
Skate Music List
Competitive Figure Skating FAQ: Skating People and Events
Skate Web (home of the main FAQs)- love the domain: FrogsOnIce.
