asherisSomehow I missed this when it first happened...
Michael Shanks decided to leave Stargate SG-1 back in October because of how the storylines had changed so drastically and left his character, Daniel Jackson, as little more than window dressing. It's bad enough they killed off Martouf so they could find a reason to keep bringing back the Tok'ra Barbie in her rubber miniskirt, but HOW can they marginalize the character that made the stargate technology possible in the first place?
Damn, he was the best character on the show. Also, the only plausible reason they were able to communicate with so many foreign races, or understand their societies! Daniel Jackson was the one with the background in languages (knows at least 23), history, mythology, and archaeology. Sam's brilliant, but he was the one who actually understood foreign cultures.
Heck, they replaced him on a couple of episodes because the character was working through some things after the death of Sha're, and the replacement wasn't anywhere near as good- couldn't possibly live up to the individuality of Daniel Jackson. Now they're trying to replace him with some "hot hunk" (as the studio put it)- which isn't what viewer's want.
The marginalizing of Daniel Jackson in the first half of Season 4 coincides with the "revelation" of the subsurface relationship between Sam and Jack- which is also complete BS and makes no sense. (Come ON, she's a freaking genius, an excellent shot, and a great pilot, not just "Jack's girl", which is how they've started portraying her!) And why have they turned the members of the team from a cohesive team of friends into the "Jack & Sam, and those other two" show?
They aren't popular changes- as evidenced by a 26% ratings drop during that period! The only episode in that half of the season that had decent ratings was one that focused on Daniel Jackson. You'd think this would tell the folks at MGM something- but no.
And so a campaign has begun, in hopes of bringing back the most loved character on the show, and returning to the group dynamics that made the show so popular in the first place.
