Homeland Security to base aid on risk, less on politics (bold mine)
Facing overall cuts in anti-terrorism financing, the Department of Homeland Security plans to announce today that it will evaluate new requests for money from an $800 million aid program for cities based less on politics and more on assessments of where terrorists are likely to strike and potentially cause the greatest damage, department officials say.

Wouldn't you have thought that's what they should have been doing from the very beginning?

This administration will go down as one of the most corrupt, and probably the most inept, in history. They certainly are giving the Nixon years a run on the corruption front! They out covert CIA agents, perform illegal wiretaps, gut FEMA (abandon a major US city, which is a major shipping port and where 40% of out oil come in), don't do squat about securing the ports, and send security funds to areas based on whether their representation votes with the administration and not based on where it's most needed. Oh, and we'll spy on the Quakers and vegans, but not do a damned thing when people like O'Reilly openly invite terrorists to strike someplace like, oh, San Francisco.

And people wonder why this administration utterly disgusts me?

I think history will agree with you. What I find equally as disturbing and appalling is that the democrats who could have and *should* have regrouped and made a strong stand against these actions has done little, if anything. They don't even bother to comment anymore.

We have President nutjob dictating terms to the American people like a dictator, and the people who should be resisting would rather sit back and watch reruns of CSI on television than DO THEIR JOB.

" based less on politics and more on assessments of where terrorists are likely to strike and potentially cause the greatest damage" - While threat assesments are important, intelligence is the crux of the issue - and the question of how to obtain this.

In the UK, I feel that our domestic intelligence failed us badly, and we suffered the London bombings of July 7th. The threat level had in fact been reduced a month before the attacks. The leader of the bombers had himself been under surveillance some 18 months before the bombings, and had been deemed to not be a threat - how wrong they were! One of the key questions that we still haven't an answer to is - why was that surveillance called off.
