These things happened in this country, to our own people. They were abandoned by our government. Remember these stories, these people, and do do what you can to keep this from happening again.

AMERICAN SHAME: The Edgar Hollingsworth Story

Death on the roof (Meet the family) Second update - after months of runaround, son goes out and searches for - and finds - his mother's remains. (waiting for a link on that)

Remembering those in need:

(If you are in the US, and particularly if you itemize on your taxes - for example, if you own a home - you can deduct quite a bit of charitable giving on your taxes. You have until midnight Saturday to make donations that will apply to your 2005 taxes.)

Emergency Communities is a great group that has been working to make sure the people returning to New Orleans (and before that, Waveland, MS) have a safe place they can go to clean up and eat healthy, hot, home-cooked meals and be with friends. If you're still considering some charitable giving this year, consider giving them a nod. (I have no connection to this group; I just think that what they're doing deserves support.)

Red Cross - yes, they have been having some issues of late... if you'd feel better about it, donate to your local chapter, and a lot of the money will stay in your area to help those nearby. (Disclosure: my uncle is the Asst. Director of the SE MN Chapter.)

If you don't have much, give a little bit to your local food shelf. Now that Christmas is past, donations will be dropping, but people still need emergency food supplies.

Habitat for Humanity is another organization that is doing a lot of work post-Katrina. They're still mainly in "pre-build" stage- gathering supplies and volunteers and working out how many home need to be build and where. They're more of a "second stage" organization when it comes to disaster recovery.

Doctors Without Borders is an amazing group, and they are doing a lot of work in the areas hit by the Pakistan earthquakes as well as other areas.

The Carter Center, a foundation created by former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn. In addition to work helping countries have fair elections and mediating international conflicts, they have been working hard for over 20 years to eradicate Guinea Worm - almost there! (currently there's a $25 million "challenge grant" from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), education and medicines for disease control and prevention, they have programs that assist farmers to increase grain production, they provide water filtration equipment, and so much more.
