Congress is about to vote on amending the U.S. Constitution to deny marriage equality to same-sex couples.

Never before has our Constitution been amended to take away anyone's rights. Yet our Senators will vote on this amendment in the next 48 hours.

It's urgent that we speak up now. This hateful divisiveness has no place in America. Please join me in saying so, at:

Equality in marriage is the civil rights issue of our generation. We can't let anyone, or any group, be singled out for discrimination based on who they are or who they love.

Actually, there was Prohibition- but I'm sure we all remember from History classes what a resounding success that was, eh?

The basic letter, with my addition in italics:

Dear President Bush, Senators, and Representatives:

With everything that's going on in our country right now, is this HONESTLY the most important thing you can think of to do with your time??

The Constitution DEFINES our rights. It was NOT intended to ELIMINATE rights. We've already learned that lesson once, with Prohibition- the only amendment ever repealed.

We've spent over two centuries working to make sure ALL citizens of the United States are treated equally; this "amendment" goes against all that it means to be an American.

I am appalled and embarrassed that it has come to this- an attempt to make the unequal treatment of one group of Americans into law.

I urge you to reject the politics of hate and division.

Everyone has the same rights. There is no place in America for a Constitutional amendment denying marriage equality to anyone.

Sincerely,
(me)
