Finally heard back from the doctor about the results of the MRI. Seems there is no tearing, "just" a severe sprain of the MCL. Said it's usually at least a 12 week healing time.

Said to stick with the hinged brace, and that letting the knee take a little weight will help healing. He suggested I get a cane- I mentioned that I'd just ordered one last night because I'm sick of crutches- and let's be honest, its hard to look professional when you're on crutches. He chuckled and commented that canes do have a bit more saviour faire. (very true)


Anyway, I ordered one last night. Ended up with something similar to the slim line design derby-handled adjustable aluminum folding cane in the "canterbury" pattern.

Have to admit, I liked the look of a lot of the canes available. (including this faux amber handled cane, and the one with the leather-bound handle. Something like 1303 with the chased silver wouldn't be bad, either... but at that price, keep dreaming, eh?) I would very much have liked a cane in ash, oak, or hazel, but what with figuring sizing, price, shipping costs, and all, the aluminum adjustable folding cane just seemed more practical.

I least I found something sensible that ought to look nice (and somewhat individual) and not like a nursing home escapee!

Lots to learn about canes online. Many of the places also sell walkers- and these ain't your grandma's clunky old steel things with sliced tennis balls on the bottoms, either! I guess a lot of them are called "rollators" nowdays. They come in all sorts of colors, have nice baskets, seats, bike-style brakes, swiveling wheels with bearings... Even if you do choose an "old-fashioned" walker, they come in all sorts of patterned finishes. (floral, pastel, "blue ice", black chrome, etc.)

I'm horribly tempted to add "you've come a long way, baby"...
