William Safire: Privacy's out when you are a suspect (I'd have called it "Privacy's out if you're an American")
Wait a minute, John Poindexter is behind the Homeland Security Act? The guy who was Reagan's National Security Advisor, and ran the whole Iran-Contra thing? The man convicted of five felony counts just 12 years ago? (Overturned because the appeals court decided that Congress had given him immunity, unfortunately.)
He's now the head of the "Information Awareness Office", which put together the Homeland Security Act.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
